Why Biophilic Design Matters in Office Fit Out

Modern workplaces have began shifting towards wellbeing-focused design, and biophilic principles are at the forefront of this movement. Employees now expect more from their workspace than just functionality, they seek healthier, more engaging environments that supports their physical and mental well-being.

With the emergence of hybrid work models and work cultures, business must create environments that entire employees back into the office – and nature-driven design is a powerful tool in achieving that goal.

Define Biophilic – What is Biophilic Design?

Biophilia – from “Bio” (life) and “Philia” (attraction or love) – is a concept first coined by Erich Fromm, meaning “love of life and living systems.” It describes our innate human tendency to seek connections with nature, living things, and natural processes. Exposure to these elements generates positive biological responses and feelings of inner happiness.

This deep-rooted connection to the natural world is embedded in our biology and observed across species. However, rapid urbanisation and modern lifestyles have distanced us from nature, often neglecting this essential psychological and physiological need.

Biophilic Design in Commercial Workplaces

Biophilic design and biophilic architecture aim to re-establish our connection to the natural world by integrating nature into the spaces where we live, work, and interact. This approach is especially impactful in commercial office interiors, where a thoughtfully designed biophilic environment can enhance productivity, creativity, and employee well-being.

How We Create Natural, Productive Workspaces.

At Proici Commercial Interiors, we incorporate nature into every aspect of our office fit out projects. Whether using living or preserved elements such as moss and plant life, renewable materials like timber, or emulating nature through textures, graphics, and biophilic patterns — our goal is to create workspaces that feel alive.

But biophilic office design goes beyond simply adding greenery. Spatial layout, airflow, natural light, and acoustic design all play critical roles in shaping a truly nature-inspired workplace.

We optimise natural lighting by using glass partitions and open layouts, encouraging sunlight to flow through the environment. Smart ventilation planning ensures optimal comfort and indoor air quality. Meanwhile, acoustic solutions using natural materials reduce noise distractions and promote a calm, focused atmosphere.

What are Biophilic Materials?

Biophilic mateirls are the nature inspired or natural touches that make a workspace feel more connected to the oudoors. These materials can range from warm timber, texture stone and natural fabrics through to organic patterns, carpet tiles and finishes.

One of our most commonly installed biophlic materials are preserved and living moss, A self-sustaining plant, moss provides a natural easy-to-Haintain visual appeal. We’ve used living moss for everything from biophilic wall features to branded signage, including projects for Stark, Jisc and UK Waste Solutions. These are a brilliant choice for office spaces as living moss can maintain itself in low-light conditions while preserved moss, unlike living moss, requires none at all.

Some Biophilic materials are not only visually appealing but also eco-conscious, sustainable, and often fully recyclable or biodegradable. These materials support green office interiors and contribute to corporate environmental goals and bring as sense of balance which supports focus and wellbeing within the workplace.

Introducting Non-Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli

These are unpredictable, momentary sensory experiences that mimic the dynamic qualities of nature — such as flickering sunlight, rustling leaves, or the sound of water.

Office workers often engage in tasks requiring close focus, leading to eye strain, fatigue, and discomfort. Integrating non-rhythmic sensory elements offers micro-breaks for the eyes and brain, relieving stress and improving overall wellness.

Environments devoid of sensory variation can cause stagnation, while dynamic biophilic environments restore alertness and engagement.
