Commercial Office Design in 2026: What Has Changed Since the Start of the Year?

What has held up so far this year, what is starting to shift, and what businesses are beginning to question as office space comes under greater scrutiny.

( 3 – 5 Minute Read )

At the start of 2026, much of the conversation around commercial office design focused on what was expected to shape the year ahead. Flexible working was still influencing the brief, collaboration space was still high on the list, and familiar themes such as sustainability, wellbeing and workplace identity were appearing across almost every discussion.

Now that we are halfway through the year, the more useful question is not what was predicted, but which ideas are genuinely holding up in practice, which ones are beginning to feel overplayed, and where businesses are becoming more demanding about how office space performs when people are actually using it.

That change in emphasis makes sense. Office space is being judged more closely than it was a year or two ago, partly because utilisation has risen, partly because attendance patterns are settling, and partly because clients are under more pressure to make every part of the workplace work harder. For a look at the ideas that shaped expectations at the start of the year, you can also read our Office Design Trends 2026 article.

From our perspective, the biggest shift since January is that businesses are becoming more critical of vague design logic. They still want attractive, welcoming offices, but they are asking sharper questions about what each area is for, how well the layout supports different kinds of work, and whether the space will continue to make sense once the novelty of a new design has worn off.

What is still holding up in 2026

A broader mix of work settings

One of the stronger workplace shifts of recent years is still proving its value because it answers a real operational need rather than a passing design preference. A workplace built around one dominant setting rarely performs as well as one that gives people a genuine choice in how they work across the day, whether that means shared project space, enclosed rooms for focused tasks, informal breakout settings, private call points or quieter corners for short periods of concentration.

What has changed is the level of care clients expect in how that mix is planned. The idea of flexibility on its own is no longer enough. Businesses are looking more closely at whether a workplace actually supports the range of tasks their teams carry out, and whether those settings have been thought through properly rather than added to the plan because they sound current.

Social space with a clearer purpose

Warm arrival spaces, more comfortable breakout areas and better informal meeting settings are still valuable, particularly where they improve the day-to-day experience of the workplace and give people somewhere practical to gather without forcing everything back into a formal boardroom. Few businesses want an office that feels cold or overly rigid, and a more welcoming atmosphere still matters.

What is changing is the expectation behind those spaces. Clients are less interested in gesture areas that fill a layout neatly and more interested in social settings that support the rhythm of the working day, encourage useful interaction and contribute something meaningful to the wider workplace. That is a positive change, because the strongest spaces are rarely the ones that look busiest on a concept board, they are the ones that stay useful once the office is in full use.

Refurbishment with better judgement behind it

Sustainability remains a major part of the brief, although the conversation around it has become more grounded. More businesses are asking what can be retained, upgraded or reused before they move towards full replacement, and that shift is being shaped by both environmental expectations and commercial pressure.

That more measured approach is one of the better changes we have seen this year, because good refurbishment rarely comes from replacing everything. It comes from understanding what should stay, what should improve, and where investment will have the biggest impact on how the workplace functions over the long term.

What has changed since January

Office space is being judged more closely

One of the clearest changes this year is that office space has come under greater scrutiny. The discussion is no longer limited to whether the workplace feels more attractive than it did a few years ago. Clients are looking harder at how it performs on busier days, how it handles movement and pressure, how well it supports different work modes, and whether each part of the layout genuinely earns the room it takes up.

That makes the design conversation more demanding, but in a useful way. A workplace now has to account for occupancy patterns, acoustic comfort, circulation, adaptability and the simple question of whether the experience holds up properly once teams are back in and using the space more consistently.

Quiet space has moved back up the priority list

Collaboration still matters, but many businesses are now looking again at acoustics, privacy and focused work because they have enough experience of open, socially led layouts to know where those environments start to fall short. This does not mean the office is becoming less collaborative. It means the balance is becoming more realistic.

The better workplaces are the ones that handle both sides of the day well, giving teams room to come together while still providing settings where people can think, work quietly and deal with tasks that need a calmer environment. That is one of the biggest practical corrections taking place this year, and it is likely to shape many fit-out and refurbishment briefs in the months ahead.

Technology is shaping the brief earlier

Another noticeable change is that technology planning is moving further up the process. Clients are talking earlier about booking systems, collaboration tools, space data, visibility across teams and the likely impact of AI on how the office may be used over time, which means tech-readiness is starting to influence layouts and infrastructure earlier rather than being added at the end.

This is still an evolving area, but it is already changing the way some businesses think about flexibility, meeting space, hybrid working patterns and the relationship between physical space and digital tools. In practical terms, that makes the workplace brief more layered than it was at the start of the year.

What businesses are starting to question

Soft, polished interiors that could belong to anyone

There is still strong demand for warm, welcoming office interiors, and rightly so, because very few businesses want a workplace that feels cold, dated or overly corporate. Even so, there are projects where the softer look starts to do too much of the work, with finishes, loose furniture and decorative details expected to create a sense of quality that the layout itself has not really earned.

This is where some offices begin to feel interchangeable. Different businesses, in different sectors, can end up drawing from the same muted palette, the same broad resimercial cues and the same loose idea of comfort, yet very little in the space reflects how that business actually operates or what its teams need from the workplace. Warmth and character still matter, but they mean more when they sit on top of a layout with real clarity and purpose.

Collaboration space that sounds right but underperforms

Collaboration remains one of the strongest reasons people come into the office, but there is a clear difference between creating useful collaborative settings and filling the floorplate with loosely defined breakout space. The issue is not collaboration itself. The issue is space that is labelled collaborative without being planned carefully enough to support how people actually review work, share ideas, make decisions or move between team tasks.

Oversized lounge zones, open bench settings with poor acoustics and informal corners that look busy in concept presentations can lose value quite quickly when they are put to everyday use. This is one of the areas where clients are becoming more demanding, because a space that looks current is not necessarily a space that works especially well once the office gets busy.

Flexibility that has never been tested properly

Flexibility is still important, although the term has been stretched so far in recent years that it can now mean almost anything. In some schemes, it has become a way of avoiding harder planning decisions, which often leaves the workplace feeling unresolved.

Practical flexibility is different. It means creating a workplace that can absorb change without feeling vague in the present, whether that involves phased growth, changes in team structure or a broader mix of work patterns over time. That kind of adaptability is more useful than simply filling a plan with movable elements and hoping the space will sort itself out later.

Sustainability language without enough project logic behind it

Sustainability is not fading from the brief, but vague sustainability language is becoming less persuasive. Clients are asking better questions about retention, reuse, lifecycle value and how a fit-out will perform over time, which is a positive shift because it moves the conversation away from broad claims and towards real project decisions.

For us, the stronger projects are the ones where sustainability is built into the design logic from the start, shaping the specification, retention strategy and long-term thinking behind the workplace rather than appearing later as a layer of messaging.

What this means for the second half of 2026

The strongest workplaces will feel more considered, not more crowded with ideas

If there is one pattern that stands out at the halfway point of 2026, it is that office design is becoming more selective, more commercially aware and, in many cases, more mature. The conversation has moved on from simply making offices feel more attractive or more relaxed, because businesses are now looking harder at relevance, adaptability, day-to-day performance and the simple question of whether the workplace genuinely supports the people using it.

From our point of view, that is a positive change because it leads to better briefs, clearer decisions and stronger outcomes. Some of the ideas that dominated early discussions this year will stay, and they should, because many of them still hold real value. What is changing is the level of scrutiny around how they are used, how much space they take up, and whether they continue to make sense once the office is in full use.

The strongest offices in the second half of 2026 will not be the ones that collect every trend still circulating. They will be the ones that feel well judged, properly resolved and closely aligned with the way the business actually works.

Commercial office design in 2026: mid-year summary

If you are reviewing your office space this year, whether you are planning a full office fit out, an office refurbishment or a more focused reconfiguration of your existing workplace, it is worth stepping back and asking which parts of the brief are genuinely useful, which are there out of habit, and which decisions will still make sense a few years from now.

At Proici, we design and deliver commercial interiors shaped around real use, clear business needs and long-term value, helping businesses create workplaces that support people properly and perform well over time. Our approach has always been simple: we listen, we learn, and we design around what the business genuinely needs rather than what happens to be fashionable at the time.

Commercial Interior Design Trends for 2026

How we are helping businesses redefine their workspaces in 2026

( 3 – 5 Minute Read )

What is the Focus of Office Design in 2026?

As technology, markets and employee expectations continue to change, workplaces must evolve to remain relevant. The modern workplace is currently experiencing one of the most significant transformations, the office of today is no longer simply a place to work; it has become a strategic asset that support culture, collaboration, wellbeing and brand identity.

The direction points in one clear direction: workspaces that feel far more human, comfortable and connected.

Sustainability remains a major driver, but the biggest evolution is the rise of resimercial design , the blending of residential comfort with commercial durability and function. As hybrid working continues to trend, companies must learn to recognise that offices must do more than provide workspaces that go beyond task-based work – they must offer an experience that employees want to return to.

How Can Proici Help?

With over 28 years of experience delivering commercial interior design, fit out, and refurbishment projects nationwide, Proici Commercial Interiors are already seeing and helping business adapt to the requirements that will define the workplace in 2026.

Why Human-centric Office Design is Set to Grow in 2026.

Employees increasingly expect workplaces that feel warm, comfortable and welcoming, rather than overly corporate. At the same time, businesses are looking for environments that boost productivity, support wellbeing and help retain talent.

At Proici we have been at the forefront of this shift, designing work environments that prioritise wellbeing, flexibility and culture. Our nationwide projects have had an increasing focus on adaptable spaces, holistic wellbeing and branded environments. The result is workspaces that people genuinely want to return to – spaces which strengthen culture and improve team performance.

Furnishing & Layouts: Comfort, Flexibility and Performance

Traditional office layouts are giving way to more flexible zones design for casual collaboration and breakout spaces. Upholstered seating, lounge settings and coffee tables are becoming central features, transforming everyday interactions into natural opportunity for culture growth and idea sharing.

Bespoke joinery is quickly becoming commonplace within working environments, from custom biophilic feature walls with brand-led signage to agile seating furniture that help communicate brand identity.

Another major shift is the decline of fixed desks. Agile working environment allows employees to choose where they want to work, from focus pods, collaboration tables and meeting booths, through to social lounges and breakout spaces. This not only improves the employee experience but ensures efficient use of space across the entire office footprint.

Materials and Finishes

Offices in 2025 saw the move towards warmer, more tactile materials such as natural wood, rattan details, soft upholstery and texture fabrics replacing industrial, “magnolia” finishes. These elements remain prominent in 2026 to create spaces that feel more grounded and welcoming.

Soft colour palettes are set to continue to help create wellbeing spaces – muted greens, warn neutrals and deep earth tones combine with organic textures to create sophistication and visual comfort.

Biophilia (Biophilic)

Biophilia continues to grow as a defining element of office design in 2026. Living moss walls, large planters and even small water features are being used to create a restorative atmosphere. Research has consistently shown that biophilic elements help reduce stress, improve cognitive functions and provide a form of non-repetitive visual stimuli within the workspace.

Find out more about how biophilia can improve wellbeing in your workspace here: Biophilic Design

Environmental control: Lighting, Acoustics and Air Quality

Environmental comfort has always been a core element of modern workplace design. Offices in 2026 have a keen focus on optimal light, sound and air quality to further support employee wellbeing and performance.

Maximising the spread of natural light remains a priority, but where this is not possible, tuneable LED lighting is being used to emulate the movement of natural daylight throughout the day. Lighting brightness and hue play a large role in how a space is perceived, with warmer tones giving a feeling of comfort whilst white provide the perception of surgical cleanliness.

Acoustics continue to be the go-to for controlling sound pollution within open-plan environments. From acoustic panelling and sound absorbing materials to quiet focus rooms and open meeting spaces. Future focused business are recognising the importance of protecting concentration without compromising collaboration and agile aesthetics.

AC and ventilation have always been a key component in office design. With the advancement in air filtration technology and smart environment controls bringing comfort at more affordable budgets, more businesses are able to provide healthier, more comfortable workspace for employees.

Hospitality-Inspired Amenities

Tea-points have grown in popularity over the last decade, with café-style breakout area and social hubs becoming the norm for most growing businesses. These not only provide a space for employees to prepare meals or hot drinks, but also encourage social connection and provide a meaningful break away from the desk.

Many wellbeing spaces are also on the rise, with companies investing in dedicated on-site gyms, meditation rooms and booths, quiet zones and even washrooms are receiving attention, with more business adopting residential-style finishes and hotel-inspired layouts that elevate the overall experience.

Why These Growing Trends Matter for UK Businesses in 2026

These workplace trends are not about making offices more informal – they are about designing environments that simultaneously support people and performance growth seamlessly. Businesses that adopt this human-focused approach can benefit from:

Greater talent attraction and retention

Increased employee engagement and collaboration

Higher utilisation of available office space

A stronger, more recognisable brand identity.

What is an Office Feature Wall?

A commercial feature wall refers to a wall or partition within the office space that is intentionally designed to stand out and make a visual impact.

Also known as an accent wall, this typically blank surface is often treated with paint, graphics, cladding or biophilic elements to create a focal point within your space.

Why have a Feature Wall in your Office?

One question often asked is; are feature walls worth the investment? The answer is often yes, and here is why. A feature wall can be used to make a statement and can become the cornerstone of your space, setting the tone and design direction of the entire space.

A feature wall can serve as a powerful branding tool, showcasing your company logo, values and personality through a smart use of graphics and finishes. This helps to reinforce your brand identity and helps communicate your values to our clients, foresting a sense of loyalty and longevity.

Accent walls also have the benefit of having functional attributes, such as providing acoustic suppression through the careful use of acoustic panels, provide a place to congregate and brainstorm by incorporating whites boards or even offering an AV solution for presentation or breakout purposes.

Biophilic Feature Wall – Bringing the Outdoors Indoors

Biophilic feature walls can be built from a plethora of materials, including petrified moss and bark, to bring a natural element into the workspace. This provides non-rhythmic sensory stimuli feature to your space; a natural break for the eyes deviates from the usual visual experience.

Biophilia ties closely with human’s natural connection with nature, which can improve the wellbeing of employees and create a calming atmosphere for clients.

Simplicity

Accent walls are more than fancy finishes, acoustic panels and cladding; they can be a single painted colour or patterns that differentiates the location from the rest of the workspace. This works as a minimalist focal point which still functions to break the space apart and enhance visual stimuli.

Simplistic feature walls also offer the benefit of being able to be placed in multiple locations without being overbearing, allowing the incorporation of floor numbers or location labels within their design to aid in navigation.

Employee Wellbeing

Creating a visually engaging workplace has been shown to positively impact employee satisfaction and engagement within the workplace. This can make employees feel more motivated and connected to the company when working in an environment that shies away from the typical CAT A, magnolia environment which may tire the senses and negatively impact productivity.

Hybrid working has quickly become commonplace in the workspace, with many employees requesting to work partially from home. It has been shown that the visual impact of the workplace plays a large role in the retention of employees. The aim is to try to make employees feel compelled to come to the office and enjoy their time there.

Feature Wall Considerations

Which wall should you make your feature wall? Should you have multiple feature walls? What are the Cost of a feature wall?

Choosing the Right Wall

The point of a feature wall is to grab the attention of the onlooker and create a great first impression which is especially important with clients. To achieve this, we typically choose a wall that both centres your main space and makes use of your architectural features.

If clients frequent your site, we would recommend putting your feature wall display close to your entrance, this will allow you display your brand and create an brand presence from the onset, which will set the tone for the meeting ahead.

However, if your business rarely hosts client, we might suggest your feature wall be situated within the busiest workspace with your commercial office to provide visual stimuli for employees, and as previously stated, aim to improve employee wellbeing.

Feature walls need not be a singular structure, many businesses choose to have a forward facing feature wall within the reception space, providing immediate brand identity from the onset, whilst a less branded but more practical feature wall is situated within the workspace itself.

What is the Cost of a Feature Wall?

While there is an initial cost associates with creating a feature wall, the long-term benefits such as improving brand awareness, improving the visual appearance of your office and improving employee satisfaction can make it a worthwhile investment for any business.

High Pressure Laminate is not suited for regularly wet or moist environments such as shower cubicles and swimming centres where the environments is constantly humid.

When it comes to the office area, HPL has a wide range of applications. We have installed HPL as space dividers, wood finish table tops and tea-point surface tops, giving the space a bespoke premium feel.

What is Solid Grade Laminate and Where is it used?

( 3 – 5 Minute Read )

Overview of Solid Grade Laminate (SGL)

Solid (compact) grade laminate is a thick waterproof panel built for intensive, high traffic spaces due to its durability and rigidity.

SGL is generally used in washrooms or sanitary areas due to its water resistance and ability to sustain in humid environments, however it can also be used in a variety of commercial applications.

Solid grade laminate is considered self-supporting and therefore can be used more freely as toilet cubicle partition panels or dividers.

How is Solid Grade Laminate made?

SGL is a thick high-pressure laminate manufactured by compressing layers of Kraft paper and thermosetting resin and merging them under great heat and pressure. This transforms the resin into a strong binding plastic and the paper into a single sturdy, water-resistant sheet.

What colour is Compact Grade Laminate?

SGL has a black core finish and typically has two decorative front facing sides. These can be coloured to meet your specific needs or infused (embedded) with artwork to produce a bespoke aesthetic that is durable and long lasting – even in a public venue.

We can offer graphic designs to suit any office, retail or learning interior as part of our fit out and refurbishment packages.

Protection against vandalism

This unqiue construction is exceptionally impact resistant and easy to clean thanks to its waterproof qualities. This makes it an excellent choice for public restrooms in retail, public, or school settings, which are more prone to vandalism.

Solid Grade Laminate vs High Pressure Laminate

HPL, or high-pressure laminate, is constructed in the same way as SGL, with phenolic resin kraft paper heated and pressurised at 5-10Mpa. The difference is in laminate thickness, with SGL having a thickness of more than 2mm and HPL having a thickness of only 0.7mm.

While High Pressure Laminates are still very robust and water resistant, they are not suitable for persistently damp environments and are not considered “self-supporting,” making them unsuitable for extremely heavy usage.

Where to use Solid Grade Laminate

Because Solid Grade Laminate has two decorative sides, it can be used in a wide variety of applications and environments.

Restaurants / Public Spaces

We have installed Solid grade laminate in a large range of public spaces, including restaurants washrooms and library toilets.

Water damage is common in these facilities, particularly in toilet cubicles and sink locations. SGL’s waterproof properties make it perfect for these locations, providing consistent splashback protection.

SGL is an exceptional solution for disabled facilities where there is a higher risk of water exposure.

Schools

Solid grade laminate provides increased impact resistance and moisture resistance, making it excellent for environments with children. SGL may also display an attractive design or vibrant colour on its two main sides, which has been demonstrated to deter child vandalism while diminishing the “blank canvas” attractiveness of a blank wall.

Retail / Shopping Spaces

Retail areas are subject to high volume of traffic, which increases the risk of vandalism in addition to the regular water damage. Solid grade laminate is perfect for the longevity of cubicles where heavy foot traffic is expected due to its resilience and ease of cleaning.

Gyms

Solid grade laminate is the perfect solution for gym washrooms and lavatories, providing the perfect waterproof solution for dividing shower cubicles, sink surrounds, open locker rooms and toilet facilities. Easy to wipe down, SGL is perfect for use throughout the gym space.

Solid Grade Laminate in the Office?

When it comes to the office space, we would typically not recommend solid grade laminate over high pressure laminate as the additional benefits are not usually required.

We seek the most cost-effective solution for each project, and aside from use in high-traffic toilet or washroom facilities, we would propose high pressure laminate or Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC), which we install on a regular basis.

We are proud to announce that our refurbished office in Bristol for the EdTech pioneers Jisc is ready to open its doors.

Our challenge with this project was to transform a five story property, spanning 2650m2 into modern office spaces that is ready to accommodate Jisc’s ever-growing business.

The space needed to display a modern take on the advancements of technology, including generation themed collaborative spaces.

What does Hybrid Working mean for your business and can your business support it?

( 3 – 5 Minute Read )

Is Hybrid Working Right for Your Business?

Working from home and hybrid working have rapidly become industry standard terms and practices, thanks in large part to the pandemic, but what does this mean for your office space and your business in general?

Hybrid Working

A hybrid working environment is built around a flexible work arrangement that allows for the seamless integration of working from home and working from a central location or office. This isn’t a brand-new way of working: it’s an extension of agile or flexible working and will mean that versatile and adaptable office space is needed, including hot desks, Zoom booths, meeting rooms, and social breakout areas.

Hybrid working does not mean the end of office work and any new policies, systems and design need to offer flexibility for all approaches to work.

Employee Focused

By adopting hybrid working many businesses have moved away from the concept that employees need to be at the same desk from 9-5 every day. Some staff would naturally choose to work from home, while others would prefer to be surrounded by their co-workers and operate in an office setting, therefore versatility is key with both your office culture and office space. The aim is to strike a delicate balance between the two and create a work atmosphere that prioritises employee well-being.

Employer Results

For some employers, the lack of direct, line-of-sight influence over their employees has resulted in team management becoming more difficult. However, for many, especially those that had a strong internal culture of trust, output has increased – mainly thanks to a better balance between work and personal life for employees, which has increased their productivity and creativity.

Many large companies have openly declared that they would encourage more employees to work in a hybrid model following the pandemic, while smaller businesses are also open to more flexibility too.

How hybrid working has changed the workplace

01. Objective Focused Workforce

Hybrid working redefines what is expected of employees and how performance is measured, with hours less manageable, the focus turns to the completion of projects and tasks.

To encourage workers to achieve these new demands, it is critical that they have access to the software, services, and workspaces that allow for optimum workflow.

02. Employer and Employee Trust

It has been shown that employees who feel valued and trusted are more likely to be committed and inspired to work, both in and out of the workplace, with the elimination of the “having to appear busy” mind-set, leading to higher well-being and more real world productivity.

03. Collaborative Work

As teams are no longer present full-time at the workplace, hybrid working can lead to challenges in communication and collaboration.

Versatile spaces, including flexible meetings rooms, are essential for when people are in the office together, but so is good communications technology and a culture that understands that collaboration can still happen informally.

04. Office Space

Hybrid working has resulted in many companies changing how their space looks and feels. Fewer set offices or banks of desks, and more versatility with hot-desking, break-out areas and soft lines and furnishings.

As you’d expect, we are already working with a number of clients about how we can help them adapt to hybrid working.

Our rollout project for the ministry of justice is well-underway, with glazed and solid partitioning helping to shape the new office spaces over the 6 different sites.

Though this space currently looks quite empty, it will soon be transformed into a space which is unique, bold and somewhere people will want to work, learn and create in.

This one-of-a-kind rollout program will adhere to similar design structures, with slight unique traits and aesthetics to help them all keeping generally in-line with each other whilst also providing a unique twist at each location.

Each location will include a new bespoke tea-point, multiple breakout spaces and learning facilities to suit our clients’ requirements.

Locations include: Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Peterborough, Leicester, Birmingham and Nottingham.
